Learn 5 expert tips from Jefferson Health’s Crown & Glory workshops—covering alopecia wigs, scalp-health education, and temple-donated chemical-free hair extensions.

I had the privilege of leading several Your Crown & Glory workshops inside Jefferson Health. Sitting face-to-face with women navigating chemotherapy or alopecia reshaped everything I thought I knew about beauty, confidence, and clean hair care. These are the five insights that still guide every bundle, wig, and scalp-care tip we share at Indian Princess Hair.

1. Hair Loss Is as Emotional as It Is Physical

Behind every “What length should I buy?” was a deeper fear of losing identity. Attendees spoke of avoiding mirrors or social outings once shedding began. The fix wasn’t just a perfect lace or density—it was reframing hair as a tool for reclaiming self-expression. We start each consultation by asking, “How do you want to feel when you step outside?” before talking textures or caps. Outcome-first styling remains our north star.

2. Sensitive Scalps React to More Than Tight Installs

Many participants reported itching, burning, or rashes within days of wearing mass-market wigs. When we checked labels, we found common irritants such as formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and para-phenylenediamine (PPD)—chemicals flagged in recent studies for cancer and endocrine risk The Guardian. Lesson learned: if a scalp is already inflamed from chemo or autoimmune activity, even trace toxins amplify discomfort.

Why we went chemical-free: Our temple-donated bundles skip bleach, acid baths, and silicone dips, so nothing harsh ever sits on compromised skin.

3. Insurance Coverage Is a Game-Changer—but Few Know How to Ask

Most private insurers will reimburse a “cranial prosthesis” with a doctor’s script, yet fewer than 20 % of workshop guests had filed a claim. We created a step-by-step insurance guide, covering CPT codes, letter templates, and appeal tips. The takeaway: education converts curiosity into covered care.

Quick tip: Download our free Insurance Cheat Sheet in the sidebar before your next oncology visit.

4. Label Literacy Empowers Self-Advocacy

We passed around bathroom products and scanned them live with two free tools:

Tool How It Helps
EWG Skin Deep® Database Type any brand or ingredient to see a 1-10 toxicity score, regulatory flags, and scientific citations. Perfect for vetting shampoos and adhesives before they touch a healing scalp. EWG
Think Dirty App Point your phone at a barcode and get an instant “dirty meter” plus cleaner dupe suggestions—great for in-store shopping. Think Dirty® Shop Clean.

Seeing a “9 / 10 hazard” rating pop up in real time did more to change buying habits than any lecture could.

5. Clean Hair Is a Long-Term Investment, Not a Trend

Unprocessed temple hair lasts 3-5 years with proper care—outliving chemically stripped bundles threefold. Clients who splurged once saved hundreds on replacements and avoided constant glue-removal stress. The math and the wellness benefits both checked out.

Bottom line: Healthy, chemical-free hair isn’t just kinder to your scalp; it’s kinder to your wallet and the planet.

Putting the Lessons Into Practice

  • Shop smarter: Run every adhesive, shampoo, and styling product through EWG or Think Dirty before checkout.

  • Advocate for coverage: If you’re in treatment, ask your oncology nurse or dermatologist for a cranial-prosthesis prescription.

  • Choose natural first: Opt for temple-donated bundles that keep the cuticle intact and skip harsh processing.
